Local Government (Electoral Legislation and Māori Wards and Māori Constituencies) Amendment Act 2024

What it actually does

Reinstates binding local referendums on Māori wards and requires councils that established them without a poll to hold a referendum alongside the 2025 local elections. Became law on 30 July 2024; in the 2025 polls, 18 councils voted to keep their wards and 24 to remove them.
