New offence for staying silent about a child's killing
What it actually does
National would create a new Crimes Act offence, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, for adults who stay silent about the killing of a child under 12 when it is clear they were present at the death or in the lead-up to it. It would draft a narrow exception to the right to silence. Defence lawyers criticised the proposal.
